    Iron is a pivotal component of the innate immune response through its role in the generation of toxic oxygen and nitrogen intermediates. It is an essential component of haemoglobin as iron deficiency results in a reduction of haemoglobin circulation and a reduction in red blood cells. This indicates that an iron deficiency would impair functioning of the immune system.
